Say No to Leather!- your favorite handbag has animal death written all over it!
I was recently overcome by this extreme desire to buy something made out of pure leather, and of course, shopping has always been my vice and thought of checking out some options from the online market as well as from the mall. I managed to short list a few things that met my shape, colour, size criterion and got over excited at the prospect of owning pure leather, but then, there was something that was constantly holding me back (nothing to do with semi nude models posing with pythons for PETA), there was some sort of a gory imagery of bulls being slaughtered that started to hound me. That actually stemmed from the fact that one item that I had short listed seemed to mention that It was made of ‘cow nappa‘. I was too engrossed in thinking how I would flaunt it and did not pay much heed to what it was made of or how and dismissed it as being some sort of a misnomer.
But then when it managed to make it to my conscience and make me feel guilty, I did a small research on it and was dumbfounded. It really is made if cow skin! What! Here is one large section of the Indian masses that worship the holy cow, me included, and then there are these companies who somehow manage to pass a cow through a slaughter machine and then peel it like its a potato! What sense does that make, I mean leather for centuries has been sourced from goat and sheep(not any less cruel)and now that its market has grown in leaps and bounds they have started to slaughter and will surely end up endangering all types of other animals as well.
The cruelest part was a tag that mentioned that some people are allergic to cow nappa and so it has been run through a special tanning mill, but wait, the only thing that is allergic here is the cow! To these big leather company fiends who wish to turn innocent animals into handbags, belts and wallets.
There is a general misconception that big companies will source their leather aesthetically and that the leather is a by product from the meat food industry but alas that is not the truth. No company, irrespective of small or big will conduct the sourcing aesthetically and why would they? They only have their sights set on the big moolah that they will make at the end and what relevance do they have with the innocence of a calf or a bull? There seem to be a large number of people conducting protests world wide but these companies are too big and too well established to care for such things or be bothered by it.
Just to achieve a certain status and pass it off by saying it keeps us warm, comfortable, soft and stylish does not mean one has to buy pure leather. There are many more better options out there and materials such as PU and faux leather that look just as stylish, in fact, more stylish!
Well, it is cliched but here goes, if the buying stops, the killing will too. It is massacre in fact.
So better stick to faux even if it is a fashion faux pas!
